Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) and Login Security

Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds a second check when you log in to HEY. After your password, you enter a six-digit code from a 2FA app on your phone. Someone who learns your password still can't get in without that code.

Start here

Go to app.hey.com/accounts in a desktop browser, or click your avatar (top right) from the Imbox. Then click Login & Security.

Setting up 2FA

You can’t turn off 2FA: once you set it up, it stays on for your HEY account.

Set up 2FA with two devices: your computer for HEY and your phone for the 2FA app.

Getting a 2FA app

Get a 2FA app on your phone if you don’t have one. We recommend Microsoft Authenticator. Duo, Google Authenticator, 1Password, and other 2FA apps also work.

On the Login & Security page, click Two-Factor Authentication, then click OK, I’ve got a 2FA app on my phone.

Scanning the QR code

On your phone, open your 2FA app and tap Scan QR code or +. Point your phone’s camera at the QR code on your computer screen. Your app generates a six-digit code.

Enter the code on the Step 2: Scan + Enter the Code screen, then click Verify and continue.

Saving your recovery codes

Save your recovery codes: click Copy, Print, or Save. Without them, you could be locked out of your account if you lose your phone or get a new one.

Then click OK, I’ve saved my codes.

Viewing your recovery codes

You’ll need a recovery code to log in if your 2FA app isn’t working. Each code works once. You can also view your codes in the HEY iOS and Android apps.

On the Login & Security page, click Recovery Codes.

If HEY asks for your password, enter it and click Continue.

Your recovery codes appear on the next page. Click Copy, Print, or Save to keep a copy.

Generating new recovery codes

Generate a new set if you’ve used a few codes, or if someone else may have seen them. Your old codes stop working, so be sure to save the new ones. You can also generate new codes in the HEY iOS and Android apps.

On the Login & Security page, click Recovery Codes. If HEY asks for your password, enter it and click Continue.

Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Generate new recovery codes.

Follow the prompts to generate and save your new codes.

Adding a security key

A security key is a hardware device that helps verify your identity, like a USB key or fingerprint reader.

On the Login & Security page, click Security keys.

Click Add a security key.
