Sending with a Non-HEY Email

You can send email from your @hey.com address plus external email addresses, domains hosted elsewhere, work accounts on other systems, as long as they support SMTP. Most email accounts do!

Note that if you have multiple HEY accounts linked together, you’ll see a “Forwarding & Sending” option for each account.

Here's how to set up sending email from an external address:

  1. Inside your HEY account, click your Avatar in the top right corner.
  2. Click the account you want to use for send-as.
  3. Click “Forwarding & Sending”
  4. Click "Connect an Address" and follow the directions to set up forwarding and sending from your external address.

Once it’s connected, you’ll be able to switch which email address you’re sending from by tapping on the “From” field. If you’re still having trouble, please reach out to our support team and we will be happy to help.

Does this work with all email services or custom domains?

Most, with a few exceptions. HEY supports the SMTP standard with basic username/password authentication, and sending as email addresses managed by Google. That means services with more complicated authentication requirements or restrictions, like some Office 365 setups, won't work.

Google Setup

There's a few finer points for setting this up for Google/Gmail accounts. The initial setup must be done via desktop browser.

  1. Inside your HEY account, click your Avatar in the top right corner.
  2. Click the HEY account you want to use, then click “Forwarding & Sending”.
  3. If you've already set up forwarding from that Google address, remove it fully from HEY. You’ll need a fresh start to trigger the Google sign-in window.
  4. Click “Connect an address” and follow the simple step-by-step directions to set up forwarding and sending.
  5. There are two main steps:
    • Setting up forwarding on Gmail to receive your emails in HEY.
    • Allowing HEY access to send email on your behalf.
  6. Select the two checkboxes for what HEY can access and then “Continue”.

SMTP... does that mean I can check external email accounts too?

No — SMTP is an open standard protocol for sending email, it’s unrelated to checking email. Checking an external email account would require IMAP support, which HEY doesn’t offer. You can forward email in from external services to your own HEY account, but HEY doesn’t check/fetch email on external services (like Google, Outlook, Yahoo, iCloud, etc.). This means the email in your external services will remain unread unless you open the email in those services.
