Recycling Center

HEY can recycle emails you don't need, so you're not keeping years old emails. Find your Recycling Center by clicking on your profile picture, then click the Account you want to set up recycling for, and click 'Recycling Center'.

Recycling is turned off by default. You can recycle emails sent to The Feed after 30 days, 90 days or 2 years. To recycle emails from a specific contact, search for the contact, then click 'Set Up Recycling'.

What happens when email is recycled?

Recycling automatically moves old emails to the Trash where they’re permanently deleted after 30 days. Deleting instead of keeping old emails saves energy and reduces pollution.

When does the clock start (or reset) on an email or thread?

Emails are recycled when the most recent message in the thread is older than the recycling period (30 days, 90 days, or 2 years). New replies reset the clock.

Can I set a contact’s emails to recycle too?

Yes! You can also recycle emails for entire domains.

What if recycling settings conflict?

HEY will choose the longer recycling period. For example, if you have a contact set to recycle after 30 days and it’s designated to The Feed, which is set to 90 days, emails from that contact will be recycled after 90 days.

What about things I really need to keep?

Flip the “Don’t automatically recycle” switch in the ••• menu at the bottom of any thread to prevent it from being recycled—even if it’s in The Feed or you’re recycling everything else from that sender.

Are attachments recycled too?

Yes. Files and images will be recycled along with the emails they’re attached to.
